Here, mankind is fated to die in five million years - a time scale which the tone of this story indicates is actually fathomable to the last surviving humans. Set in an unfathomably far future in which the moon has been destroyed, the Earth is a barren place covered by alien, inimical life, and humanity is confined to a massive multi-level pyramid known as the Last Redoubt. It's basically a work of fan fiction based on an obscure novel by early pulp writer William Hope Hodgson, which I have not read. This novella will not be to everyone's taste. I am awake in the night, and I hear his voice. His whole company had perished in their flesh, or had been Destroyed in their souls. Years ago, my friend Perithoös went into the Night Lands. In the dream, they are going to a funeral, and Clara knows she is profoundly sad, but she doesn’t know yet whose funeral it is.Meanwhile, Clara and Christian get to be friends (much to Tucker’s chagrin), and Clara learns a lot more about angel “society.” There are some confrontations with a “black wing” (a fallen angel) and some lessons from a full-blooded (non-fallen) angel. Again, Christian is a part of them rather than Tucker. She worries about the repercussions, but so far, all that has happened is that she has new visions. At the end of book one, Clara, who is now 17, defied her visions (which putatively are to direct her toward her purpose as an angel-blood) in order to rescue her boyfriend Tucker from a big fire instead of going first to rescue Christian, the boy in her visions. Note: This book contains a mild spoiler for book one (but NOT the big reveal), and no spoilers for this book, book twoThis is book two of the “Unearthly” series about teenagers who are part angels, and their problems they have because of this mixed status (see my review of book one, here). Shift the scene to Minneapolis, where young Luke Ellis, precociously brilliant, has been kidnapped by a crack extraction team, his parents brutally murdered so that it looks as if he did it. “There are pills that will brighten your attitude”). Turns out he’s a decorated cop, good at his job and at reading others (“You ought to go see Doc Roper,” he tells a local. His pockets full, he sticks out his thumb and winds up in the backwater South Carolina town of DuPray (should we hear echoes of “pray”? Or “depraved”?). As King’s ( The Outsider, 2018, etc.) latest opens, he’s bargaining with a flight attendant to sell his seat on an overbooked run from Tampa to New York. Tim Jamieson is a man emphatically not in a hurry.
